Since summertime is when many people take vacations, it is sure to bring relaxing days by the beach and quality time with family and friends. While it’s wonderful to take it easy and get a much-deserved break, it’s still important to keep up with your oral health. You don’t want to have a cavity or other dental issue to keep your smile from shining brightly this summer. Read on to learn five ways to keep your teeth and gum in their best condition while you enjoy summer 2023!

#1. Stick With Your Oral Hygiene Routine

As with any special time of the year, it’s easy to get off track from your regular routine. This can be especially true during the summer months, with traveling and different activities during the day. Try to make it a priority to still brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. If you are going to be away from home for an extended period, pack a small kit with a travel-size toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss. This will help you easily care for your smile while you are away.

#2. Drink Plenty of Water

Staying hydrated is essential during the summer months for your overall health but did you know it also helps your smile? When your mouth becomes dry, it increases the risk for harmful bacteria to grow, leading to tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. Additionally, water also helps to wash away remaining food debris and sugars, which can harm your pearly whites. Carry your favorite water bottle with you as you are out and about to make it easy to take sips throughout the day.

#3. Limit Sugary Drinks

Time to pack the pool or beach cooler! Unfortunately, it can be filled with soda, lemonade, juice, or sports drinks. These high-sugar drinks can wreak havoc on your pearly whites, causing enamel erosion—which leads to cavities. Be sure to limit these drinks. When you do enjoy one of these sweet beverages, you can use a straw to protect your teeth from direct exposure.

#4. Choose Nutrient-Rich Snacks

During vacations, it’s easy to snack on sugary or starchy treats out of convenience. This is another factor that can put you at risk for tooth decay. While balance is key, try to reach for more smile-friendly choices. By opting for snacks like yogurt, vegetables and dips, and mixed nuts, you can keep both your mouth and body healthy!

#5. Visit Your Dentist

While your daily dental routine is essential in keeping your oral health at its best, attending your biannual checkups is too! Summer can be the best time to fit one of them in since you may have a bit more flexibility with your schedule. Your dentist can give your teeth a thorough cleaning, getting them camera ready for all the photos you’ll be taking on your trip! Also, they can treat any issues, like gum disease, before they become more serious. After you visit, you can be completely worry-free while you enjoy your summer, knowing your smile is healthy and thriving.
