Did you know that flossing removes 40% of plaque from your teeth? That means that skipping the floss sharply raises your chances of developing tooth decay. Even so, approximately one-third of adults never floss at all. Though many people treat flossing like it’s optional, it’s one of the most important parts of maintaining a healthy smile. So, why not make a point of flossing more in the new year? Read on to learn 5 ways to stick to your New Year’s resolution to floss more often.

Tip #1: Start Off Slow

According to an article from The Economic Times, only about 16% of people follow through with their New Year’s resolutions. Most people give up within six weeks of starting. There are many reasons why most New Year’s resolutions don’t stick. One reason is overzealous goal setting. Going from not flossing at all to flossing every day is easier said than done, so why not start slow? Try to incorporate flossing into your oral health routine a few days per week and work your way up from there.

Tip #2: Refresh Yourself on the Proper Technique

Do you know the correct way to floss? If not, do some research. Look up diagrams or watch videos online to help you get the technique down. Knowing you’re doing it the right way may help motivate you to continue.

Tip #3: Use the Right Products

For some people, traditional dental floss isn’t the right option. For example, it can be difficult for those with mobility issues like arthritis to hold and maneuver their floss the right way. Some people just can’t find floss that works for them. Luckily, water flossers are an alternative to traditional floss that can help you remove plaque and bacteria from between your pearly whites.

Tip #4: Remind Yourself to Floss

Whether you do it by setting alarms on your phone or leaving sticky notes in the bathroom, make sure to remind yourself to floss. Before you know it, flossing will become first nature and a regular part of your oral hygiene routine.

Tip #5: Make Flossing Convenient

If possible, floss your teeth before you go to bed. This will clear away the debris that’s gotten stuck between your pearly whites throughout the day. Even so, flossing at some point during the day is better than not at all. Consider keeping dental floss in your car, purse, or backpack so it’s easy to access and use whenever you have time.

Though flossing your teeth every day is a key part of maintaining a healthy smile, it’s okay if you have to work your way up to it. With the above tips and a little determination, you can stick to your resolution and make it to the end of the new year with your smile healthier than ever before!
