Wisdom Teeth Extraction — When Is It Necessary?

Posted on: May 5, 2016

At Bridlewood Dental, Rodger Song, DDS can perform wisdom teeth extractions on a regular basis. Your third set of molars can often be more of a hassle than they are worth. For example, if they are growing in impacted, your wisdom teeth will begin to cause you incredible amounts of discomfort. This typically happens because there is simply not enough room for them to grow in straight and correctly. The challenge with impacted teeth is that they create areas for food and bacteria to become trapped, increasing the risk of you developing an infected tooth. Simultaneously, if they are growing into the surrounding teeth or putting pressure on your jawbone, you'll begin to feel discomfort throughout the growing process. In this case, it can become necessary to remove your wisdom teeth through one of our extraction procedures.

Visit the Dentist for an Examination

While wisdom teeth extractions are often necessary, it is also possible to keep your wisdom teeth if they are growing in straight and not putting any unnecessary pressure on the surrounding teeth. As a Flower Mound, TX dentist, we can examine you and take x-rays before letting you know if we recommend leaving your teeth in place or scheduling a wisdom teeth extraction. We will provide you with sound advice and information, so you can be empowered to make a decision that you feel is best for your personal oral health.

As a 75028 dentist, the only non-health reason we see to schedule a wisdom teeth extraction is if you or your child have had braces and have spent significant time straightening your teeth. After getting the braces removed, it is possible for teeth to continue moving. Unfortunately, wisdom teeth can only compound this problem by putting pressure on your other teeth and forcing them to move forward, out of the position that you have so carefully placed them in through your orthodontics treatments. If this is a concern for you or your child, call (972) 957-3707 and schedule an examination with our dentist office.
