When the sun doesn’t set until well after 8 PM and the temperature gets in the 90s, you know summer is officially here – bring on the days by the pool, meals by the barbeque, and nights by the fire roasting s’mores! However, this time of year isn’t just good for your tan, it’s beneficial for your smile too. Keep reading for what the latest research says about the summer sun and healthy gums.

The Link Between the Summer Sun & Your Oral Health

When it comes to the health of your teeth and gums, prevention is paramount. In addition to following a solid at-home oral hygiene routine, the journal of Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology is also suggesting that patients spend plenty of time in the sun this summer. Why? Simply put, Vitamin D is essential for a fully functioning immune system, which fights off infections, like gum disease. Plus, Vitamin D can help keep your bones and teeth healthy as well!

How to Stay Safe in the Summer Sun

Although the benefits of spending time outside during the summer are undeniable, prolonged, unprotected sun exposure is risky. Fortunately, there are a few simple measures you can take to protect your skin. To start, wear SPF daily, including an SPF lip balm to protect your lips. You should also drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, especially since you’ll likely be sweating in the summer heat. Lastly, if you do get burned, make sure to care for it properly by applying aloe vera and taking cold baths or showers.

4 Important Dental Hygiene Practices to Follow This Summer

Spending some time in the summer sun is an important, and often forgotten, part of keeping your smile healthy. However, it is by no means the only best practice you should be adopting this summer. Here are a few more:

  • Schedule your checkup and cleaning – To ward-off decay, remove stubborn surface stains, and catch dental problems in the early stages, you should visit your dentist every six months. Since 2021 is already nearly halfway over, make sure to schedule your appointment if you haven’t already.
  • Treat flossing as important as brushing – Brushing for two minutes twice a day is important, but you need floss to effectively clean your teeth.
  • Eat a vitamin-rich diet – Pool-side sodas and late-night ice cream runs are staples of the season, but don’t forget to fill your diet with nutrient-dense foods as well to keep your teeth and gums healthy.
  • Avoid unhealthy dental habits – Using your teeth as tools, chewing on ice, and smoking are just a few things that can turn your fun summer day into a trip to the emergency dentist.

Summer is practically here, which is great news for you and your smile! Amid the hustle and bustle of the season, make sure to spend some time outside each day. Your teeth and gums will thank you for it.
