For some, getting dental implants is like getting a fresh start on life. They look and function just like natural teeth and have given many the ability to eat and smile with confidence. But even though they are cavity-resistant and durable, your implants still need to be taken care of. Here are 5 bad habits to break to help keep both your teeth and your dental implants in great shape.

Stop Smoking

Smoking, whether it be 1 cigarette or 20, is damaging to your oral health. It slows the healing process after getting dental implants and reduces your mouth’s ability to fight off infection. Smokers are also 2 to 3 times more likely to lose their implants altogether! The good news is that there are many different tools available on the market today to help you quit. If you’re not sure which method will work best for you, your doctor can help.

Using Your Teeth as Tools

If you’re opening a package and scissors aren’t readily available, your first instinct may be to use your teeth to tear the tape or open the top of the bag. While it’s very common for people to do this, it’s not a good practice for your teeth or your implants. Using your teeth rather than scissors, nutcrackers or bottle openers can break or crack both your implants and your natural teeth. It can also cause damage to your gums.

Chomping on Ice

When you finish a soft drink or iced tea, it may be natural to open the lid and start crunching on the leftover ice. While chomping on ice provides a satisfying crunch, the pressure can crack or chip your dental implants. Instead of ice, try crunching on almonds or walnuts.  They both contain magnesium, calcium and iron which help your teeth and bones to stay strong and healthy. Eating them also stimulates the production of saliva which washes away cavity-causing bacteria and neutralizes any acids they may leave on your teeth.

Drinking Red Wine

Studies show that drinking a glass of red wine can be beneficial to your heart. Unfortunately, it can also stain both your natural teeth and your dental implants. Luckily, eating cheese with your wine can help minimize this beverage’s effects. Cheese, especially hard cheese, coats your teeth with calcium to help protect them from stains.

Not Flossing

Dental implants are not susceptible to tooth decay, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t floss. Bacteria, plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) can make their way below the gum line and put you at risk of gum disease. Flossing at least once a day will help you keep your teeth and gums free of odor-causing bacteria.

The longevity of your dental implants is up to you. Avoiding these bad habits, proper dental hygiene and visiting your dentist regularly will keep them in excellent shape for many years to come.
